Addax Petroleum is recruiting to fill the below position:

Job Title: Engineer - Construction

Job Number: 140524
Location: Lagos

Position Description

To carry out construction supervisory aspects of Addax civil engineering / construction projects, based on AFC drawings and specifications. The job is primarily focussed on onshore site civil construction works within APDNL’s OML 124 concession, but the incumbent may be required to occassionally visit / work in other onshore locations within Nigeria.

Position Requirements
Job Duties/Responsibilities/Accountabilities
  • As site construction engineer, take full responsibility for construction work execution and coordination, with special emphasis on quality assurance of the construction works, and on CASHES (community affairs, safety, health, environmental and security) issues.
  • Monitor the progress of contracted work so that the schedule and milestones are met, providing reporting on same to line management, as well as providing early warning of potential slippage; in the case of the latter, propose remedial actions so that the “required for use or occupancy” dates for the works are not jeopardised.
  • Participate in the review of contractors‘ schedules for the individual projects to satisfy contract duration requirements.
  • Assist with the review of any consultant or in-house design work, verifying constructability of designed structures and structural components.
  • Ensure that appropriate standards and specifications are employed for materials’ selection and construction, so as to deliver fit-for-purpose permanent works, which satisfy the requirements for safety, accessibility, operability and reliability / maintainability.
  • Determine or assist contractor on site to determine any emergent design or scope changes that may be required as a result of unforeseen site conditions, carry out minor structural calculations (including detailing, sketching and scoping as appropriate) and escalate to direct supervisor.
  • Prepare construction method statements and schedules.
  • Prepare periodic reports (daily, weekly, monthly, incident etc.) as required on all projects.
  • Ensure the proper close out of projects, including the production of as-built dossiers (construction records, etc.) and as-built drawings, both as hard and soft (electronic) copies.
Projects to which the incumbent is likely to be assigned are:
  • Earthmoving, building and concrete works and structural steelworks related to construction of new drilling / campsite locations or the rehabilitation of existing ones (in particular within Njaba Field, in APDNL’s OML 124 concession, Imo State).
  • Earthmoving, surface sealing works, drainages and culvert works related to construction or rehabilitation of access roads (in particular within Njaba Field, in APDNL’s OML 124 concession, Imo State).
  • Construction / renovation of APDNL’s offices and other buildings / structures at Onne, Rivers State.
  • Construction, renovation and repairs works to APDNL’s offices and other buildings / structures in Lagos.
Key Performance Indicators/Performance Goals
  • No fatality, zero LTI’s (lost time incidents) on all projects.
  • Submission of daily, weekly and monthly reports (or as otherwise required) on all projects.
  • Completion of assigned projects on schedule, within budget and according to specifications.
  • Submission of project closeout report (including “lessons learned”) for individual projects, no later than 4 (four) weeks after completion of construction works on the relevant project.
Financial Dimensions
  • Budgetary responsibility rests with line manager.
  • The value of the works for which the incumbent is day-to-day responsible may be in the region of $ 1 million - $ 4 million per annum.
Job Specifications
  • An honours degree in civil engineering from a recognised university.
  • Corporate membership of Nigerian Society of Engineers or equivalent is a requirement.
  • Registration with COREN as an “Engr” is an advantage but not a requirement.
  • 10+ years
  • 32 – 45 yrs
Key competencies requirements:
  • Experience in site construction activities - excavation, filling / compaction, reinforced concrete placement, building and masonry works, road works and flood water control, structural steelwork welding / erection and water borehole drilling.
  • General project execution management experience.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Must be fully computer literate in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Project.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential, for dealing with a broad spectrum of cultural and organisational styles, as well as being able to fit in as a team player.
  • Full mobility, so as to maintain the necessary influence at the various locations where activities related to the works will be carried out.
  • Knowledge of the locality (that is, state and local government) where the construction works will be executed will be a major advantage.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with local contractors, sub- contractors, suppliers and the community workers most of whom are semi-literate and so being able to speak the local language, Igbo, (as well as a fair understanding of local customs and traditions) would be a distinct advantage.
  • Providing and communicating clear directions to suppliers, contractors and on workers site.
  • Demonstrating the energy, commitment, focus and follow-through that deliver high quality results.
  • Handling conflict, managing change sensitively and keeping others informed on key issues.
  • Being committed to achieving excellence in own field; establishing high standards for self and others.
  • Being a good communicator and team player, with high degree of safety awareness.
